Braids is a triptych, composed of 3 large panels
It is part of the continuity and the deepening of Barbara's latest creation "Braids/Montréal", produced during a one-month residency
from November 15 to December 15, 2020, at the Centre des Arts de La Maison of Haiti, located in the Saint-Michel district of Montreal.
The braiding tradition refers to a ritual of women working many hours together. This hairstyle then creates a cohesion of the social group and helps consolidate the intergenerational links between women.
Barbara Prézeau-Stephenson is a multidisciplinary artist recognized internationally, working between France and Canada. Born in 1965 in Port-au-Prince Haiti, she represented the Caribbean at the World Expo in Seville in 1992. She has since continuously exhibited in museums around the world such as the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in California, the Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University in New York, the FROST Art Museum in Miami, the Portland Museum of Art, the Delaware Museum, the Monterey Museum in California, the Museum of Modern Art in San Diego, the Grand Palais Museum in Paris, the Haitian Art Museum, and the MUPANAH. She participated n the Biennials of Havana, Dakar, Venice, and Mer cosur in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In the Spring of 2026, she was part of the Creaivity has no Border exhibit at the Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba in New York City.
