Artist of the Week: Etzer Charles

Etzer Charles was born in Jacmel, and started to paint in the 1960s. He left for France in 1974 where he studied at the Paris University while still pursuing his research on painting. He had an active political life and was Haiti’s ambassador in France for several years.  His work is part of several permanent collections among them the Fondation France-Libertés.  In 1990, he received the Vitellius d’Argent at the 8th Prix International de Vittel and in 1991, he received the Grande Coupe de la Fondation Paul Ricard at the Salon National de Nancy.  He has taken part in numerous group and solo exhibits in Haiti, France, the USA and the Caribbean. He passed away in February 2021

Gerard Fortune

Gérard FORTUNÉ was born in Pétionville around 1930. A cook by profession, he started to paint in the 80s when he was already in his fifties. He May be one of the few authentic naive painter who rose after 1970. His inspiration was landscapes, street scenes, and socio-political events. He also talked about lwas and voodoo. He lived and worked in Pétionville. He passed away in 2019.

Artist of the week: Franketienne

Franketienne is best known as a writer, but as a painter he is important for the breadth and uniqueness of his art. Without formal artistic training, he began painting in 1972 and immediately found himself immersed in the style of acting painting. His works have been exhibited worldwide, including in Europe, Japan, the United States, and the Caribbean. He passed away in February 2025.
